The European Commission (DG Economics and Finance, team “Competitiveness, productivity and business environment”) wants to recruit an atypical trainee for two or three months during the summer period 2021. The assistance of a trainee could be valuable in various analytical projects that the team is currently working on, such as the markup project and the sectoral analysis/projections of Covid-19 impact. Under the supervision of the team, the trainee will perform data analysis, using a selection of databases to which the team has access. See the attached file for a more detailed description of the traineeship. The candidates should be enrolled in a Master’s programme in economics or statistics and have the nationality of a member State of the European Union. To select the candidates for an interview, you are asked to perform the following challenge. 1/ Make a short literature review of main articles written on the impact of Covid-19 on firms' productivity and markups. 2/ Use available databases (from OECD or other sources) to build a quarterly database, that could be used for panel regressions, with the following information: country, year, quarter, sector, productivity, sanitary indicators (such as the Oxford Stringency Index) and other indicators that may be useful to explain the evolution of productivity in the context of the Covid-19. For productivity, existing indicators may be used, or the candidate may also build the indicator (or several depending on the definition and available statistics). The database should cover as many quarters of 2020 as possible and start at least in 2000 (for countries for which data are available). The perimeter of countries is OECD and the database should cover economic sectors inside non-financial and financial corporations. When data are not available for a given country/quarter, use "." to signal a missing value. 3/ Perform one or a few simple panel regressions (with possibly adequate fixed effects) to capture the possible impact of the pandemic on productivity of sectors. 4/ Suppose that we have data on mark-ups of sectors (or even firms): propose a few additional explanatory variables that may be used to explain the evolution of mark-ups during the pandemic. No need to implement regressions for this question, which is just explorative. The final output will consist in a short note (in English) of no more than 4 pages giving the main results and explaining what has been done, and an excel file with required database. Central banks usually have price stability as an objective. Since anticipations may also be a source of inflation if they are not stable, it is important for central banks not only to measure current inflation but also anticipations. Several indicators of anticipations have been used up to now: surveys with professional forecasters, companies or households. In countries with bonds indexed on inflation, calculations can be made on related interest rates, compared with the ones of bonds which are not indexed on inflation, to get a proxy of inflation, as anticipated by financial markets. Derivative products linked to inflation may also give the view of financial markets on inflation anticipations. With the development of datascience, new calculations can be performed. Among them, the text mining of press articles or social media (Twitter for example) can be used to get estimates of anticipations by a more general audience than only professional forecasters, especially from companies and households. The goal of this challenge is threefold: 1/Write a literature review (between 2 and 4 pages, word or pdf) on text mining used on inflation anticipations , proposing additional articles (at least 10) compared to the list of articles mentioned in the attached excel file. 2/ Investigate in a separate document (word or pdf, which can be short: one or two pages) the ongoing projects on this issue by central banks other than Banque de France, in the Eurosystem and in other major central banks in the world (using all sources that can be found, either in reports, in working documents or in the work programmes of these central banks that are made public, or any other relevant source (speech…)); 3/ In a more explorative way, find either in the literature, in academic projects, or from your own proposals, other innovative/original technics (for example coming also from datascience or other technics) that may be used to get estimates of inflation anticipations, other than text mining, the ones coming from surveys or from financial markets which have been mentioned above. The results of these investigations will be included in a separate document of one or two pages (word or pdf). Anticipations of financial and non-financial economic risks are key for central banks, as they have financial stability as one of their main objectives and usually perform forecasting of main economic variables (GDP, inflation, employment…). With the development of new technics such as datascience and text mining, it is possible to assess the main economic risks mentioned in the newspapers (e.g. Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Les Echos, etc.) or in other published sources (reports…) or in social media (Twitter…). Text mining techniques on these sources can range from a simple word count (i.e. how many times a given risk - such as an oil shock - is mentioned across different articles?) to sentiment analysis (relying on natural language processing, how this risk is perceived: high, medium, limited?) for example.
